Classic Taiwanese idol drama, Meteor Garden (流星花園) in 2001 made the boy band, F4 members consisting of Jerry Yan (言承旭), Vic Chou (周渝民), Vanness Wu (吳建豪) and Ken Chu (朱孝天) and the female lead role, Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛) popular in China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. After 16 years, the film producer, Angie Chai (柴智屏) announced they will be filming a remake version of Meteor Garden drama and Shen Yue (沈月) acts as the female lead role, Dong Shan Cai (杉菜), while Dylan Wang (王鶴棣) acts as the male lead role, Daoming Si (道明寺). On 25th April 2018, Barbie shared her thoughts about filming the drama on Weibo and it turned out that she hated her role as Shan Cai.
Barbie said: “Yes, I admitted I was indecisive about whether to act as Shan Cai. I told Angie that I hate Shan Cai as she was a slut and I will not film it. The director tried to convince me for a long time and explained that it was normal for an ordinary girl to feel confused when there was 2 hunks confessing their love for her. Hence, I dislike Shan Cai when acting halfway but still try my best to reduce the hatred from the audiences. The audiences were pure at the time and decided to let go of Shan Cai. Who knows they will be making a remake version? It will be full of loopholes this time. I admit Shan Cai is considered green tea and try my best to make her look beautiful.”
Barbie was not the only one reminded of the old memories but Rainie Yang (楊丞琳) as well. She forwarded Barbie’s message on Weibo and said: “Meteor Garden drama is considered last century drama. It is my first work piece and the audiences only discover that I act as Xiao You (小優).” Rainie tried 3 role characters and was supposed to act as Li Zhen (李真) initially. But something shocking happened to her on the first day of the shooting.
It turned out that the crew team felt Rainie was suitable to act as another role character, Xiao You and it made her felt excited. She said: “I love Xiao You in the comics. I was not chosen for the role character during the audition and because of the director, everyone kept calling my role character name after filming the first series. Nobody knew my real name at the time and they called me Xiao You for several years but I am very happy though. Ha. Anyway, thank you to Meteor Garden drama for becoming a stepping stone and helping me to gain some recognition.”
